The smoky eye is a breeze to master. Learn step by step how to do it. In the evening, this timeless classic has become as essential as the little black dress. It adds drama to the eyes and makes them ultra-sexy. Although it has a distinctly evening look, it can also be worn during the day with a touch of rock style or in a softer version for added sophistication.

Lay the foundation by applying a matte nude eyeshadow (skin beige, champagne) across the entire eyelid and brow bone.
Choose a medium-intensity smoky shade, such as taupe brown or slate gray, and blend it over the mobile lid up to the brow bone.
Layer for a more intense effect, and add a final touch of a slightly darker shade of the same color on the outer corner of the eye and in the crease.
Blend the shades together with your finger.
Line the lash line with a black pencil, moving from the outer corner to the inner corner.
Feel free to make the line a bit thick.
Blend it with your finger.
Repeat the same process under the eye, starting from the outer corner and moving toward the inner corner, staying as close to the lash line as possible.
Blend it with your finger.
Set the pencil by blending a black shadow over it with a fine brush.
Extend the shadow toward the center of the mobile lid.
Reapply dark (non-black) eyeshadow in the crease and outer corner to add structure.
Layer until you achieve the desired intensity.
It's better to start light and build up gradually than to go too intense right away.
As for your brows, they should be well-groomed but natural.
A dark eye look with strong brows doesn’t feel modern.
At 20. Follow the same application technique as the step-by-step guide, but have fun with color, choosing shades more or less vibrant depending on the occasion: plum, violet, green, electric blue, midnight blue.
At 30. Dare to go total black, morning and evening, for a true rock look that adds style and highlights the iris. In the evening, increase the intensity by layering black powder shadow over your daytime smoky eye.
At 40. Opt for brown shadows over pure black. Instead of blending dark shades across the entire mobile lid and crease up to the brow bone, shade only three-quarters of the mobile lid. In the crease, use a nude shadow.
At 50. Stay even closer to the lash line and soften the look by choosing taupe, hazelnut, rust brown, or slate gray tones as dark shadows. Add a touch of light shadow in the inner corner of the eye to open and refresh the gaze.
What should I pair with smoky eyes on the lips?
YES to nude or petal pink lipsticks; these sensual tones are a foolproof choice as they create a beautiful balance between bold eyes and subtle lips. Opt for satin or slightly glossy textures for added radiance.
YES to raspberry hues for a more sophisticated style. A slightly bold pink, like a bitten-lip effect, is more flattering than nude as you age. Having nearly colorless lips around fifty is risky.
NO to bright reds; with intensely smoky eyes, it looks too much, too artificial. As for very dark reds, they amplify the dark mood of the smoky eye, so it’s a big no.
